TRAINER: Carmen Littlejohn
How did you get started in the industry? My undergraduate work at Kansas State University was in movement science or kinesiology. Soon after graduating, I moved to California and began personal training. I soon took on management of my first gym, hiring and training staff. Eventually, I ran 3 different facilities and opened my own. When I began specializing in a clientele that was between 40 and 65 years old, I realized I needed to learn how to work effectively with chronic pain, injuries and postural issues. Describe your studies in those areas. I began studying Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) in Denver and later studied Egoscue Postural Realignment Therapy in San Diego, interning in their Northern California office. Egoscue Postural Realignment is an exercise-based therapy designed to relieve pain created by misaligned joints. After relocating to Chicago, I augmented my education with a course in Thai massage therapy, and completed a masters degree in trans-personal psychotherapy. What's next? I am beginning a masters and doctorate program in September, studying Somatic and Clinical Psychology. I'm interested in learning more about the ways we disassociate from our bodies and therefore cause stress, pain and disease. I hope to eventually specialize in the psychological ways we can overcome weight and pain problems. What do your workouts look like?
Because each of my clients has different goals and also very different bodies, I tailor workouts specifically around individual goals. Some clients want to get fit, some want to lose weight, some want to be free from pain, and others want to build muscle. The one thing they have in common is the desire to get results. I use all my tools to help each client achieve his or her goals while staying pain free, and most important, while having fun.
